Trula Mae Gwin

Trula Dalton Gwin, died in Houston on January 9, 2012 from Alzheimer’s disease. She was ninety years old. She was preceded in death by her parents, A.E. and Oma Ward Dalton, a brother, A.E., a sister, Nettie Holmes, and her husband, Bill Gwin.
Trula was born in Rockwood, Texas, Coleman County, on October 6, 1921 on her family’s farm. She graduated from Mozelle High School in 1938. After graduation, she worked on the farm until she entered nurse’s training at Scott & White Hospital in Temple in 1944. Trula graduated with honors as a registered nurse from the program in 1947, and continued working at Scott & White for several more years.
She married William Arthur (Bill) Gwin of Temple in 1948. They were married for 53 years. They had two daughters, Nancy and Marilyn. Bill’s work with the U.S. Department of Agriculture required the couple to move several times. Besides living in Temple, they also lived in Clyde, Haskell, Wortham, and Hillsboro. Trula continued working in hospitals in Fairfield, Wortham, Hubbard, and Hillsboro. After 40 years of nursing, Trula retired at Hill Regional Hospital in Hillsboro in 1984.
Trula was a member of the Church of Christ. Besides being a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, she enjoyed sewing in her spare time. She liked to dress well, and her sewing skills allowed her to keep up with the latest fashions.
She was also a volunteer for the Red Cross when she lived in Wortham. Trula was one of the original participants in Harvard Medical School’s Nurse’s Health Study, which began in 1976 and is still continuing today.
Trula is survived by her daughters, Nancy Gwin of Dallas, and Marilyn Gwin Kitchens of Houston; two grandsons, Bill Kitchens of Dallas, and Kyle Kitchens of Houston; sisters Faye Benken of Houston, Louise Tufft of Felton, California, and Patricia Duncan of Bloomfield, New Mexico, a brother, Luther Dalton of Sweetwater, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service is planned for Trula on Friday, January 13, at the Dallas National Cemetery with George Baker from the Highland Oaks Church of Christ in Dallas officiating.
