I had the pleasure of being Shirley's neighbor for quite a few years now, and it saddens me to think of my world without her in it. She was special and my conversations with her shall be missed. I express my condolences to her family and friends for their loss. But, I have no doubt that her indomitable spirit lives on in them as it did in her. May God grant her a Blessed place by his side. And may He grant Peace to those who Love Her at this time of Their grief at Her passing from this World to a Better One. She shall be missed...
Our beloved mother, Shirley Dockstader Richey, ascended into Heaven peacefully on the 28th day of January 2012, while surrounded by her family.
Shirley was born on the 17th Day of October 1931 in Girard, Kansas. After graduating from Jeff Davis High School in 1949, she married Robert Donald Richey. They lived briefly in Austin, Texas, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Ruidoso, New Mexico until 1965 when they moved back to Houston, Texas. Shirley was very talented. As a youngster, she played softball and was drum major for her high school band. She loved singing in the church choir. Shirley was a medical secretary and ran her own business for many years. She could type over 120 words per minute! You could hear her early in the morning just tearing up her Selectric typewriter keyboard. Shirley was also a wonderful writer of poetry. She wrote each of her girls a special poem at each of their graduations. Shirley was an excellent seamstress and would sew all of her daughter’s dresses so they all looked exactly alike! One of Shirley’s favorite hobbies was bowling. She would bowl every Friday morning at Champion Bowling Lanes when she lived in Spring Branch and bowled several 200 games. Shirley was very honest and was never afraid of telling you what she thought about you or what you may be doing.
Shirley was a loving and generous Mother and Grandmother, making sure everyone had whatever they needed, be it food, money or whatever. We love you and will miss you dearly!
Shirley is joined in Heaven with her husband, Robert Donald Richey, her parents, Lee Oney and Elzada Dockstader; her sisters, Marquita Edwards, and her husband, James, and Bette Tate; her brothers, Billy Dockstader, and his wife, Ramona, and Max Dockstader; son-in-law, Gary Hinklin; and granddaughter, Karina Hinklin.
Shirley leaves cherished memories to her daughters, Darra Harris, and her husband, Steve, Karin Hinklin, Donna Nasso, and her husband, Michael; six grandchildren, Christian Harris, Erik Hinklin, and his wife Yessica, Keaton Harris, and his wife, Kristie, Dana Blair, and her husband, Brandon, Kasey Nasso, and Andrew Nasso; and five great grandchildren, Gabriel Harris, Teylor Hinklin, Karson Harris, Kalyn Hinklin, and Kelli Blair. She also leaves behind many special nieces, nephews and in-laws; and a large circle of friends, including those of her church family at Christ United Church of Cypress and many others who filled her last several years with love, kindness and support.
The family will receive friends for visitation from 6:00-7:00 p.m., Friday, February 3rd at Cypress Fairbanks Funeral Home. A Memorial Services and celebration of Shirley’s life will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 4th at Cypress-Fairbanks Funeral Home, 9926 Jones Road, Houston, Texas 77065 where Darrin Holub, Pastor, will be presiding over the service. Later in the afternoon, the family will gather for a private service at Brookside Cemetery in Houston.

Words seem inadequate to express the sadness we feel and we share in your sorrow. Shirley was a sweet, little firecracker who had her girls trying to keep up with her until the end of her days. She was a sweet soul and kind friend which she passed on to her loving daughters. May the peace which comes from memories comfort you now and in the days ahead.

We are so sorry to hear about your Mom; she was special to our Mother. Mama was always glad to hear from Shirley. I think they both liked to talk on the phone. Shirley was nice to call Mama; she looked forward to her calls! Mama also enjoyed your Dad's visits! I can still hear Donald laughing; he had a wonderful laugh and so did Shirley! You girls had wonderful parents and I know they were very proud of you!
