Ruben Gonzales Cantu, Sr. Date of Birth: Wed, 01/03/1945 Date of Death: Thu, 06/14/2012
Our Dad was born on January 3, 1945 in Rio Grande City, Texas. He was born into a poor humble family. No one would ever know that our Dad grew up with no father, because our Dad was the greatest. He persevered through life and was always a man of his word, he was proud to be an American, but most of all he loved his wife, children, grandchildren, and family. He served in Vietnam and is a decorated Veteran and received a Purple Heart and Silver Star, along with many other accomplishments in his time in the Army. He married our mother Odilia Garcia Cantu on December 9, 1967 in Houston, Texas. He was a Journeyman Sheet Metal Worker and is truly a legend of his trade. He was a member of the Local Union 54. Our Dad enjoyed the simple things in life; hunting, fishing, working outside, but he loved being with his family relaxing in the country. Together, they have four children: Elva Yulatic, Monica Armendariz, Sonya Torres, and Ruben Cantu, Jr. Together they share nine grandchildren: Roxanne, Gabriela, Mia, Victor III, Savannah Marie, Emma, Corbyn, Jaxten and Josiah. Our loss is so great. We will always love him. He will always be with us. We will see him again in Heaven by the Lake. We love you Daddy.

Tio Ruben, You were my tall, dark and handsome uncle. when I see my boys pumping iron and gulping down their muscle building concoctions, I am reminded of you. I think you were the first muscle man in the neighborhood back in the old days. I tell my kids that if Webster had a definition for Tall, Dark and Handsome, it would say, Ruben Cantu :)
Your quick smile is forever embedded in my mind and your humble spirit is something that few possess and many should strive for (something I will strive for). You made our world so much better, how can you not be missed!! I know you are in a much better place, free of pain, and like the olden days " full of vitality".

We will meet again, say hello to my dear daddy, whom I miss so much.

From a small book that has helped me through my grieving ...

"Grieve as God grieves, trembling over the power of the love that seems lost, but is only changing."

"Everything precious, including our dignity can be taken from us, but the one thing that cannot be taken away is our power to choose what attitude we will take toward the events that have happened."

May you find peace and love in the memory of a beautiful husband, father and warrior.

If you knew my grandfather than you know he was, is, and always will be a great man. He didn't talk much but when he did you listened, because everything he said meant something. I dont believe he's gone because he will always have a special place in my heart, I believe he is looking out for us and that his soul is now in peace. His memory will always be carried on in our family.
We'll all see you again po-po in a place where death has no meaning.
See you in the comic books.
