Born in Mishawaka, IN

Carl W Lerner, 81, of Houston, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle passed away peacefully on Friday June 9, 2017 after brief illness.  He was born in Mishawaka, IN to Erwin J and Thelma (Robison) Lerner.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters Dorothea Riehl and Aline Leighton.  He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sharon Glorfield Lerner, daughter Shannon Lerner, sons Carl W Lerner, Jr and Morgan D Lerner. Grandchildren Caera D Lerner and Ross W Lerner. Sister Elaine “Kitty” Hoskins and sisters-in-law Sandi Glorfield and Mary Sue Glorfield.  Numerous nieces and nephews.

Carl moved to Corpus Christi, TX with is family as a young boy, and helped his father build their house.  In his youth, he was a Golden Glove boxer, boxing under the name of Skeeter.  He also enjoyed bull riding and bareback riding in rodeos around the state.

Well-read and well-traveled, Carl loved spending time with his family, and hunting and fishing.

He had a long and varied career.  He helped to start the boilermaker local in Corpus Christi. As a boilermaker, he became a welder and went on to become a welding specialist.   This career took him to Guinea in West Africa for five years and then on to Libya for 10 years as a pipeline and tank inspector. Living in Malta during this time, he and his family were able to travel around Europe and North Africa.  The highlight of this were Easter Mass at the Vatican with Pope John Paul II and making lifelong friends in Malta.  After leaving Libya he became an inspector state side with Lakehead Pipeline Co for another 14 years traveling and living throughout the upper Midwest before retiring in 2004. In the 1980s, he found a spot in Segovia, TX to build his hunting retreat.  Building his cabin with mostly recycled material over several years, he fondly referred to his cabin as “Carls Bad Cabin”.

Always a good cook, in retirement he discovered his love of baking, especially peanut butter cookies and pecan pies.
