John Reagan Holmes was born on June 21, 1924 in Donie, Texas to Abner Andrew Holmes and Ella Mae Holmes in a family with 4 sisters and 4 brothers.  He passed away from earthly concerns to Heavenly glories on November 23, 2017 at the age of 93 years 5 months surrounded by his family.   He graduated from Donie High School in 1940.   John served in the United States Army during World War II between March 1943 and October 1945 as a Communications Operator.  Serving in such locations as England, Normandy, Omaha Beach on D-day, and at the Battle of the Bulge.  After returning to Texas he graduated from the University of Houston in 1950 with a BS in Business.   On May 24, 1952, he married Hazel Merle Touchton of Pleasant Hill, Louisiana and they settled down in Houston.    He worked at Holmes Boat Works from 1950 till 1960 before going to work at Cameron Iron Works.  He retired from Cameron Iron Works in 1986.   Known as J.R. or Johnny by friends and family he served at his church in a number of roles over the years and was a faithful member at Westway Baptist Church.    J.R. is survived by his wife of 65 years Hazel Touchton Holmes, one daughter Carol Holmes Rodgers and her husband Andy Rodgers and one son Darrel Wayne Holmes. Two grandchildren Rebecca Rodgers Dunne (Tim Dunne) and David D. Rodgers.  Also a family of cousins, nieces and nephews.  

Visitation will be held at Westway Baptist Church, 11027 Perry Road Houston TX 77064, on the morning of Thursday November 30, 2017 at 10:30 followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 11:30.  Interment will be 2:00 that afternoon at Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
