Bernice “Grandma” O’Dell Schmidt was welcomed to Heaven on Tuesday, June 8, 2021 at the age of 84. Chester Schmidt (husband), Carol Buendia and Camillia Barrington (daughters) William Frank and Lillis Vivan Gullatt Weeden (parents), Vernon M. Leonard, Virginia “Ruth” Smith, Jerald “Butch” Weeden, and Thelma “Cooter” Phipps (siblings) were all able to greet Grandma with open arms as she entered the pearly gates.
Grandma was born in Rockwall, Texas on July 5, 1936. She grew up in East Texas with her family of cotton farmers. She was known for her strong work ethic and perseverance. She was an accountant, and later she owned her own barbeque restaurant. She loved to work outside planting beautiful flowers, and she took much pride in her vegetable garden, and canning.
She always kept a clean and tidy home, loved to cook delicious dinners for her family, and baking sweet treats during the holidays. Christmas was her favorite time of year, and her family always looked forward to Christmas Eve, Easter, and Thanksgiving at her house. She was dedicated to Houston First Church of God for over thirty years and made lifelong connections with many families and friends.
She lived the last 13 years by herself. She was very independent, took care of herself and was very protective over her family.
Her greatest accomplishment was her family. She raised 7 children, 22 grandchildren, and countless great grandchildren. Her legacy runs deep, and she will always be remembered and treasured as a sweet mother and grandmother. She is survived by her children Janice Wilkinson, Bennie Currey, Vivion Perkins, Bernest Currey and Penny Dodson.
She lived a happy life and always loved rejoicing with the lord and praising him to the highest. Even towards the end of her journey, she knew every word to every hymnal, and she would raise her little arms up to praise Jesus Christ. She will be loved forever and dearly missed.
