Doris Daphine Karnes

Doris Daphine Karnes passed away January 15, 2022.  She was born in Batesville, Arkansas on November 20, 1928 to William Shirley and Pearl Underdown.  She lived in Batesville until age ten and then moved to Longview, Texas.  She then moved to Houston at the age of fourteen.  She remained in Houston for the rest of her life.  She graduated from Reagan High School.  Married at age 18 to Jack Brooks where she had her first daughter, Linda Joyce Brooks.  She then married Hamilton Amos Cope and had two more daughters, Kim Denise Cope and Claire Delyse Cope.

Doris loved to travel and see new things.  She spent many years volunteering for the Pioneers, a volunteer group for Southwestern Bell.  She was a very independent women, entering the workforce in 1969.  She worked for Southwestern Bell aka AT&T off and on until she retired at the age of 64.  In total she worked for them for 37 years.

Doris was preceded in death by her father William Shirley, mother Pearl Osborne Bryant, sister Erika Keaton, brother-in-law Jerry Keaton, daughters Linda Joyce Brooks and Claire Delyse Cope, nieces Donna Gayle Harris and Nola Gann and son-in-law Jerry Lee Betts.

Doris is survived by Kim Cope Betts, niece Jeri K. McEntire and husband Wesley McEntire, great nieces Donna Keaton, Vicky Fudge and husband Jerry Fudge, great nephew Baron McEntire, great great nieces Hannah Fudge, great great nephews Justin Caka and wife April Caka, Trevor Caka, Zane Fudge, step grand-daughter Gretchen Barker and husband Peter Barker, step great grandsons Geoff Ford, Corbin Ford and Zach Ford and her long time friend Robert Hadaway.
