Doug Z. Karis

Douglas Zachary Karis passed away on December 29, 2021 in Houston, Texas after an eleven-month battle with cancer.

Doug was born on September 13th, 1956, in Hartford, Connecticut to William “Bill” and Jackie Karis. As a result of his father’s career as a geologist, Doug grew up living in many places with his family, such as Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Australia, Connecticut and Louisiana. Doug graduated from Louisiana State University in 1981 and began working in the steel industry in Baton Rouge. In 2001, he moved his family to Houston, TX where he resided until his death.

Doug was a devoted husband and father. His family was always his top priority as well as spending time with friends. He enjoyed reading the newspaper each morning as well as taking care of his yard and home projects.

Doug is survived by his wife of 35 years Elizabeth Rioux Karis; his four children Angela Halbert (Brett), Emily Baker (Jayson), Erin Karis, and Alexis Karis; and grandchildren Greyson and Kate Halbert; sister Diane Kuklinski (Andrew). Doug is also survived by his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Valerie Rioux, Mike & Patti Rioux, Paul & Cheryl Rioux, Janet Rioux, Jim Rioux,  Phillip & Trudy Rioux, Tim & Lisa Rioux, Tom & Shannon Rioux, along with many nieces and nephews.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents William and Jackie Karis.

A memorial service will be held at Cypress Fairbanks Funeral Home on 9926 Jones Road on Saturday, January 8, 2022, from 2 to 5 pm. A brief celebration of life service will start at 3:00. The memorial service will be followed by a visit to the neighboring Klaus Brewing, one of the local breweries that Doug enjoyed visiting, to raise a glass in his honor.
