Tribute

CASANOVA, Hilda, age 84, formerly of Houston Texas passed away peacefully on Thursday June 25, 2020. Hilda battled Alzheimer’s for many years and is finally resting and united with her husband. Hilda was born and raised in Cuba, where she raised a family of two sons, Carlos and David, with her husband, Gilberto. In 1980, Hilda and her family escaped communism and migrated to the United States risking their lives in hopes of achieving the American dream. There were times of struggle, but together as a family they persevered while settling in Houston, Texas. They did reach that American dream by becoming business owners and purchasing a home.

Once her husband passed, Hilda proved to be a very independent woman who devoted her love to her sons, family, and grandchildren. The biggest way we experienced her love was by way of cooking.

Our “mami” and “abuela” was our Gordon Ramsey in the kitchen and no one can ever compare to her magical hands. She had an infinite amount of delicious authentic Cuban dishes we were blessed to experience. Let’s not forget “un Cafecito” at the end of those belly full meals. Dare we not leave out “sweets”.  Not only were her desserts to die for, but she had the biggest sweet tooth, and nothing brought a bigger smile to her mouth, except her grandkids of course.

We spent every Saturday in her house in fellowship, she cooked, we laughed, she cleaned (because everything always had to be clean), we ate, and watched TV. Each of those Saturdays was occupied with watching The Price is Right, Wheel of Fortune, Don Francisco, boxing matches, or her obsession with Walter Mercado’s daily horoscope.  She also loved her flowers and working in her garden, which had the biggest most beautiful array of roses.

Hilda, daughter of the late Andres and Maruca Reyes, was preceded in death by her husband, Gilberto Casanova and sister Josefa. She is survived by her brother Francisco; and her sons and significant others; Carlos and Dignora, and David and Maritza; and five grandchildren; Jackie, Jonathan, Vicky, Jessica, and Cody, and 4.5 great grandchildren; Javi, Jordan, Josiah, Cason, and soon to be here “baby Cole”. Her family and friends will sadly miss the beauty with the gorgeous blue eyes.
