Jim Hammonds of Cypress, 77, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2022. His beloved wife, Sharon and son, Michael were by his side. Jim was born on March 28, 1944, in Rome, GA.
He graduated from The University of Texas in 1967 earning a BBA in Accounting and Finance. While at UT, Jim sang with The Longhorn Singers.
Upon graduation, he was commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy and attended Officer Candidate School in New Port, RI. He was assigned to the USS White Plains in San Diego, CA, and he met Sharon two weeks after arriving there. There were married in 1969 and shared 52 years of married life.
Jim was respected by his sailors as recollected in an outpouring of Facebook posts. He was promoted to LT before leaving the Navy in 1969.
He was employed by Dresser Industries for 30 years. During the George W. Bush Administration, he worked for the US Department of Education under Secretary of Education, Dr. Rod Paige, in the accounting department. Jim loved architecture and history of old houses. He built a Virginia Tidewater House, a plan designed by Thomas Jefferson. He was a talented pianist. He loved gardening and nature, and he was an old muscle car hobbiest.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Susie Hammonds, and his son Jeff Hammonds, with whom he shared the same business fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi, and a love and talent for music.
In addition to his wife, Sharon, he is survived by his son Michael Hammonds who shares his fascination for muscle cars; his beloved granddaughter Maddie Hammonds; and numerous nieces and nephews.
