John “Paul” Roberts, age 79, of Jersey Village, Texas, passed away Sunday January 10, 2021, peacefully in his sleep. 

He was born on September 26, 1941 in Ennis, Texas to Bryan Candler “BC” and Jessie Leone (Cale) Roberts. Paul resided in Jersey Village for 47 years with his wife Marjorie “Jayne” Hulett Roberts and their two children, Lori and Bryan. Paul and Jayne were married on August 1, 1964 in Richmond, Texas.

Paul graduated from Rice University in 1964 with a BA/BS in Electrical Engineering and earned his Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from SMU in 1972. While at Rice he was involved in the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps and the Honor Council.

Paul was very involved in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, The Foundry United Methodist Church, where he sang in the Chancel Choir, taught Sunday School and was a member of the Foundry Emergency Response Team. He was also a member of the Jersey Village CERT team and a certified EMT. Paul was an avid Ham radio operator and also sang in the Houston Chorale Society, where he and Jayne traveled to several different locations in Europe for concerts. 

Paul is survived by his wife Jayne of 56 years. Daughter Lori Hurta and husband Kirby Hurta, of Cypress, TX, stepchildren Cameron Hurta and Alyssa Hurta. Son Bryan Roberts and wife Christy of Cypress, children Bryce Roberts and Brooke Roberts. Sister Carol Ross and husband Raybon Ross of Houston and Brother David Roberts and wife Judy Roberts of Tomball. Nephews Jeff Ross and Kevin Ross and their families. Niece Allison Gaspard and her family.

Paul is preceded in death by his parents BC and Jessie Roberts of Houston, Tx.

Paul was an Engineer for LTV working on the guidance system for the Gemini rocket program during their time in Huntsville, Alabama. After he and Jayne moved to Houston in 1970, he worked for Houston Lighting and Power (Reliant Energy) until retirement in 2004.

Paul was an active member of the Sam Houston Chapter of Boy Scouts for 40 years.  He received the Silver Beaver Award in 2008 for Volunteerism, served on the Hornaday Awards Committee, and District Advancement Chair for the Rising Star and Big Cypress Districts.  In addition to the Boy Scouts, Paul was also very active with the Girl Scouts.  He received the Thanks Badge and the Family Award, served as the council’s photographer for many events, and also served as a Senior Troop Leader.

Paul and Jayne loved visiting the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park, Colorado. They would take yearly trips where he enjoyed hiking the trails and taking photos of the wildlife and scenery. Paul’s ashes will be interred into a cremation niche at the YMCA of the Rockies. They also loved to travel with family, friends in the Houston Choral Society, and took several cruises.

Paul was known for his intelligence, kindness, volunteering, unwavering faith, and willingness to help whenever needed.
