Tribute

Johnny Lynn Morris was born in Dallas, Texas to Helen Lukens on September 10, 1958 and passed away unexpectedly Friday, October 15, 2021 at St. Luke’s Vintage Hospital in Houston.  A point of pride for John was his service to his country. He served in the US Army and was stationed in Nuremberg, Germany. He was trained in utility helicopter repair, which later led to an interest in the aviation field. He earned numerous certifications in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and advanced to serving as a Quality Control Manager. Additionally, he served as a consultant and trainer across the state in the areas of safety and quality control. He was committed to precision and excellence in both.

John had a passion for our country and its history. It was not uncommon to find him watching the History Channel whenever he had free time. Whether it was history or other topics, he simply loved learning and continued taking courses and earning certifications throughout his career, even as recent as weeks before his passing.  He took courses at the University of North Texas while living in Denton, where his two children, Corey and Kayce were born.

Corey and Kayce were John’s “treasures.” In a heart-felt memoir John wrote to his kids, he shared, “My children have provided me the strength to continue, and I hope they see me as a role model, even when they are disappointed in me.  I am trying to be the man I need to be, and that is the gift I want my children to understand—never give up no matter what and take care of your treasures (read the full memoir below). He was a devoted father, willing to do anything to support his family—no questions asked.  He was also a devoted Grampa to Wesley, who loved hanging out with him and his beloved dog and best friend, Zeus.

John had a contagious laugh and a quirky, charming personality that people appreciated. He was a loyal friend, father, and grandfather, who often gave of himself, almost to a fault. He loved classic cars, coins, and German steins (and perhaps the beer they were designed to hold). He loved Renaissance festivals, Star Trek, Star Wars, old movies, and Celtic music. He couldn’t sing, but the one song he would croon as a joke was My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean. We are certain it was the one song he knew by heart.

John was preceded in death by his dad, Richard Patrick Morris; his mother, Helen Lukens Morris; his brother, Timothy Patrick Morris; and his niece, Tara Morris.  John is survived by his son, Corey Alan Morris; his daughter, Kayce Michelle Morris; his grandson, Wesley Alan Morris; his cousin, Steven L. Morris and wife, Jacqueline and their children; and his nephew, Patrick Morris.

A memorial service with military honors will be held at Cypress-Fairbanks Funeral Home on Sunday, October 24. Viewing is from 12:00-2:00 with the service, officiated by Pastor Falous McCarty, immediately following.

John’s remains will be cremated and his ashes interred at the Houston National Cemetery at a future date.
