Jonathan Matthew Garza

With deep sorrow and profound sadness, we mourn the passing of Jonathan M. Garza, a resolute man and courageous protector of our community. He was born on January 16, 1989, in Houston, Texas, to Irma Garza and Raul Garza; he was the younger brother of Jessica Garza and uncle of Ariana Gomez. Jonathan passed away unexpectedly on May 10, 2023, at the age of thirty-four. 

He was a kindhearted man who was always willing to lend a helping hand to his family, friends, and colleagues. He had a passion for public service and worked in the medical field for many years before choosing a different calling. In 2019, Jonathan was accepted to the Houston Police Academy, where he graduated from in 2020 as a Police officer. Since then, he loved his job, the camaraderie with his fellow officers and serving his community—fearlessly putting the welfare of others above his own. 

Out of uniform he was the consummate jokester of the family. There was never a dull moment for those around him—he made us laugh so much by sharing his joy for life. Jonathan was deeply loved by his entire family—especially by his niece Ariana who looked up to him as her Superhero. He was admired by his girlfriend Jennifer Laurel as well as her daughter Emery Lopez - both of whom he cherished. Bringing home his furry baby Bella in 2021, he dutifully looked after her day and night. In his free time, he enjoyed outdoor activities, taking his beloved pup on walks, working on his off-road vehicle and fishing whenever the opportunity presented itself. All who knew and loved him will deeply feel his absence. 

Jonathan is preceded in death by his father Raul Garza, grandparents, aunt, and uncle. 

Even though Jonathan is gone, his memory will live on in our hearts and we are forever grateful for the time we spent together and for his service in uniform.
