Larry Wayne Melcher was born on January 24, 1953 to John and Bernice “Mildred” (Iselt) Melcher in Giddings, Texas and was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, November 30, 2019 in Houston, Texas. He received the Sacrament of Christian Baptism on February 8, 1953 at Christ Lutheran Church in Loebau, Texas by Pastor H.O. Hartfield. Larry was confirmed by Pastor R.H. Lawrenz at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas on April 7, 1968. His confirmation verse was “Hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.” Revelation 3:11. Larry’s confirmation hymn was “I Come, O Savior, To Thy Table”. He was married to Shirley Zoch at St. Mark Lutheran Church. This marriage was blessed with two children, Laura Ann and Matt Wayne.
Larry and Shirley made their home in Houston where they were active members of St. Mark. Through the years, he served in various church activities including sound technician for all church services and the Houston Lutheran Chorale. Larry worked for Symmank Drywall as a sheet rocker most of his working career before transitioning to a mailroom clerk first at ABB Lummus Global and then at Tranter. Larry next worked as a maintenance helper at St. Mark. He retired from his sound board post at St. Mark in 2016. During his final months, he enjoyed attending worship services at Our Savior Lutheran Church. His interests included old tractors, barbequing, polka music, organ music, and watching old classic westerns.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mildred Melcher.
Larry is survived by his wife, Shirley; his two children Laura Leal and her husband, Robert of Houston, Matt Melcher of Houston; his two brothers Delbert Melcher of Lincoln, Daniel Melcher and his wife, Sandra of Cypress; his sister Linda Leitko and her husband, Barry of Houston; and many other family members and friends.
Serving as pallbearers are Matt Melcher, Delbert Melcher, Daniel Melcher, Barry Leitko, Mark Leitko, and Sean McMahon. Honorary pallbearer is Robert Leal.
