Tribute

On January 14, 2022, Lourdes Miriam Bennett, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend went to be with the Lord while resting in the arms of her loving husband at the age of 88. Lourdes was born on April 6, 1933, in Ponce, Puerto Rico to Father Ulysses Quinones and mother Vicenta Quinones Torres.

Lourdes grew up in Ponce, Puerto Rico with her 16 brothers and sisters. At the age of 6 years old, she began to show a love and passion for cooking and by the time she was 9 years old, she was able to prepare a full Puerto Rican meal for her family. Her father was blown away and enjoyed her cooking as well as many others have throughout the years. When she was younger, she also had the opportunity to help her grandmother, who was a midwife, deliver some of her brothers and sisters. When she was 17 years old, she moved to New York to live with her grandmother. While she was there, she worked at an eyeglass factory, where she was asked to be their model. She loved going to Coney Island and the beach; it was a train ride from her apartment, but she loved the commute. After spending 10 years in New York, she moved back to Puerto Rico where she would meet Edwin G. Bennett, who would soon thereafter, become the love of her life. Over the course of her life, she expressed her love and passion for her husband, children and family through family gatherings, holiday celebrations and surprise visits to the family out of state. During her life she enjoyed traveling the United States with her husband in his 18-wheeler truck and also being adventurous with her children. Some of the many things she enjoyed doing in her free time included growing and caring for her plants, sewing, spending time with her family and fishing trips with her husband.

As a young adult, her brother Jose, showed Edwin a picture of her, and Edwin told Jose, “you are going to be my brother-in-law!” Edwin knew the moment he saw that photo, that she was going to be his wife and the love of his life. So when Lourdes returned to Puerto Rico, she truly met the love of her life in Edwin. Edwin remembers the first time they set eyes on each other, they both experienced love at first sight and this love would grow stronger and stronger over the next 63 years. Edwin and Lourdes would often be seen loving one another and expressing their affection towards each other without a care in the world. Their marriage was a beautiful union and true testament of a Godly foundation. When they spoke their vows, for better or for worse, sickness and in health, these words were truly meant and lived out daily.

Lourdes is preceded in death by her father Ulysses Quinones and mother Vicenta Quinones Torres, daughters Irene Colon and Sandra Bennett. Left to cherish her memories are her beloved husband, Edwin G. Bennett, and children Elaine, Mercedes-Sonia, Edwin and Nelly as well as her 17 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.

Lourdes is and will forever be a Proverbs 31 woman. This is a woman that is virtuous in the eyes of the Lord and all those around her. This woman works hard to honor God, is faithful, loves others and prays for others. She was an extremely strong woman in her faith, and she loved and prayed for her family deeply. She never gave up on God and this is a true testament of her faith. She lived a life full of love, laughs and good cooking. She will forever be loved and remembered in all of our stories, memories and our hearts. We can find comfort that Lourdes' heart was with Jesus and now she is in the presence of the Lord, and we can rest knowing we will see her again one day.

Proverbs 31:28-29: Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.”
