Michael Angel Montes, loving father, son, brother, compadre, and friend, passed away at the age of 39 on April 23, 2021. Michael was born on October 11, 1981, to Norma Martinez and Jose Guadalupe Montes, Sr. in Houston, Texas. Michael was the proud and devoted father of 3 children: the beautiful Angelina and Angelique, and handsome Michael “Mikey” Jr.
Michael held a special bond with his twin brother, Gabriel. Growing up, the two were inseparable. They did everything together, from playing Ninja Turtles where Michael was, of course, always Michaelangelo (Gabriel was Leonardo) to playing video games like Mortal Kombat, even though they inevitably ended up fighting it in real life. They got into trouble together too, like the time they started a fire under the kitchen table. As they grew older, they were always connected. Even after not seeing each other for an extended period, when they did meet again, they would discover they had bought the same clothes. They maintained that close brotherly bond throughout their lives.
Michael married Brenda Reyes in 2000 and had their two daughters, Angelina and Angelique, both daddy’s little girls and named after their father’s middle name. In 2007, Michael welcomed his son, Mikey. Mikey was with Michael everywhere he went and had a close father-son relationship. Although Michael and Brenda had divorced, they still maintained a close friendship. Michael and Mikey were part of Brenda’s family with her husband, Felipe, and their children, Cuino, Bola, Cunie (the nicknames Michael called them). They were a blended and united family.
Michael’s commitment to his family was strong. He was always there for his children and worked hard to make sure they were well taken care of. He proudly tattooed his children’s names, birthdays, and zodiac signs on his body. He had many other tattoos, including his nickname “Money Mike,” all the things he loved, and tools he used for work.
Having lived in Houston his entire live, Michael loved the city’s sports teams, especially the Astros and Texans, often attending games with his kids and brothers. He was the first one at the theatres when the latest Marvel movie was released. Michael was an avid pool and dominoes player; in pool he would sometimes lose, but no one could touch him in dominoes. Michael loved to barbeque and drink Modelos on the weekends with his friends and family, listening to his favorite music such as Los Tigres del Norte and Ramon Ayala.
We all have many wonderful memories of Michael, his laugh, his smile, and his enormous heart. Although reserved and selectively social, once you were part of his life, he treated you like family.
Michael is survived by his mother Norma, father Jose Sr., step mother Irma, brothers Gabriel, Jose Jr., and Joel, sisters Nadia, Stacey, Kassandra, Elizabeth, and Gladys, daughters Angelina and Angelique, son Michael “Mikey” Jr., ex-wife Brenda, comadre/sister-in-law Chela, Godson Giovanni, his girlfriend Pam, nieces and nephews, and other family and friends.
Michael is preceded in death by his sister, Joanna Starr.
The family wishes to thank EnerMech Mechanical Services for their support and contribution.
