Nolan Douglas Marchand, of Houston, Texas, was born in Picayune, Mississippi on November 15, 1925 and died peacefully at home with his family present on November 2, 2017.  “Doug,” as he was known to his family and friends, grew up in Louisiana, and enlisted in the United States Navy in September of 1943. He served during World War II in the Pacific Theater as a Radioman 1st Class aboard the destroyer USS Woodworth (DD-460). The “Woody,” as the ship was known to its crew, took part in Task Force 38, and saw combat on multiple occasions, including Kamikaze attacks, for which it was awarded Five Battle Stars. Doug was aboard the Woody as it escorted President Roosevelt’s ship to Kodiak, Alaska in August of 1944. Doug remained close to his shipmates the rest of his life. After the war, Doug earned a master’s degree in chemistry from Louisiana State University, and went to work as a polymer chemist for Dow Chemical Company in Freeport, Texas.  At Dow, he developed original formulations for urethane elastomers. He left Dow in 1969 and, together with the late Dick Walker of Houston, Texas, formed Esco Plastics Company, which supplied urethane products and coverings to various industries. In his retirement, Doug grew azaleas, which, being a chemist and avid gardener, he did with few peers, and he traveled the world. Doug loved his family, his “adopted grandson” Michael Anderson, his friends at Esco Plastics (Kurt, Jeff and Champa), and music. Doug was preceded in death by his wife, Natalie, and is survived by his daughter, Marie J. Marchand of Houston, Texas, his son, David V. Marchand of Plano, Texas, his five grandchildren, Victoria Rosas, Natalie Loyd, Donovan Marchand, and Ashley Lewis, all of Dallas, and David A. Marchand, of Plano, and his six great-grandchildren: Preston Rossi, Vivienne Rosas, Bralie Loyd, and Sawyer Martin, all of Dallas, Tyler Cruse and Emma Cruse, of Frisco, Texas, and his step-daughters Sandy Schleuter of Florence, Kentucky and Lesley Hill of Fairfax, Virginia.
