Nolan Allen Young, 91, passed from this life on February 25, 2020.
He was born to John Allen and Margaretta Brooks Young on Nov. 8, 1928 in the Loma Community in Grimes County, Texas. He attended school in Huntsville, Texas and started playing the guitar and singing while still in high school.
Nolan married the love of his life, Bonna Fay Bledsoe, in 1949, three days after her graduation from high school. They were married for 62 years until her death in 2011.
In the early years of their marriage, Nolan continued to play music professionally with various bands in places throughout Texas and other neighboring states, including Tin Hall in Cypress, Texas. He retired from playing professionally in 1961 after the birth of his third son.
Nolan returned to school and earned a degree in Accounting from the University of Houston in 1964. He worked as a comptroller for the Suniland Furniture Company in Houston for 36 years and retired in 1992. He enjoyed his music throughout retirement and even played in a band with other retired musicians.
Nolan and Bonna attended the Tomball Road Church of Christ and the Champions Church of Christ, where he served as an elder for more than 20 years. They later attended the Jersey Village Church of Christ and rarely missed any church events or the opportunity to help their church friends and others.
Throughout the years, grandpa and granny loved spending time with their 10 grandchildren. From family vacations at Garner State Park to sporting events, graduations and more, they usually had a front-row seat. Grandpa enjoyed singing for the kids, who can all recite the words to “Grandma’s in the Cellar” and other tunes that they loved to hear him sing and play on his guitar.
Grandpa will surely be missed but we know we will hear him sing again some day in Heaven.
Nolan is survived by sons: Terry Young; Jed Young and wife Susan; and Clay Young and wife Lisa. Grandchildren include Audrey McCleary and husband Kevin; Nathan Young; Jodi Young; Mindy Camp and husband Brien; Kati MacGeorge and husband Jeff; Monet Young and fiancé Jonathan Foster; Mason Young and fiancée Erin West; Bonni Young; and Carli Young; and Cassidi Young. Great-grandchildren include Lane MacGeorge and Colton Camp. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, and friends, including his childhood friend Jackie (Thomas) Alford, who helped him enjoy his later years of life. Nolan was preceded in death by great-grandchildren Madison and Tanner McCleary.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, March 1, from 1-3 p.m. at the Cypress-Fairbanks Funeral Home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 2 at the Jersey Village Church of Christ, followed by interment at Ten-Mile Cemetery in Madison County.
