Sonia R. (Shartle) Butler, age 90, passed away on Sunday, July 30, 2018. Sonia was born on March 15, 1928, along with her identical twin, Sandra, in Ponchatula Louisiana. The twins were adopted by Charles W. and Dora Shartle. Sonia went to Lamar High School and graduated from Tarleton Jr. College. It was at Tarleton that she met her future husband, William (Bill) C. Butler, Jr. They were married on November 5, 1949 and shared fifty-five happy years together. She was a loving mother to her three children, Lynda, Brady and Karen. Sonia had a deep Christian faith and was active in the Presbyterian church as a member, deacon and Sunday school teacher. She also volunteered at Ben Taub Hospital’s chaplain’s office. Sonia is survived by her daughters, Lynda Lane and husband Howard, Karen Presley and son Brady Butler and wife Maria, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren in addition to numerous nephews and nieces. She is preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Dora Shartle, husband, Bill Butler, sister, Sandra (Shartle) Hellums and brother, Floyd Facundas. Sonia was loved by many for her down-to-earth nature and her quirky sence of humor. She was most at home fishing in her boat. Sonia loved the outdoors and that love was handed down to each of us. She is deeply loved and will be dearly missed.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Sonia’s life will be held on Sunday, August 5, at 2:00 p.m., at Cypress-Fairbanks Funeral Home, 9926 Jones Road, Houston 77065, with a reception to follow at Sterling Country Club.
