On Tuesday, October 27, 2020, Thomas Charles Schalk passed away at his home in Houston, Texas. Thomas served as a Captain in the US Army, completing two tours of duty in Vietnam from 1968-1969 and 1971-1972. During his first tour, he served as a Forward Artillery Observer with the 92nd Field Artillery Regiment “Brave Cannons” attached to the 5th Special Forces Group. After completing his first tour, Tom completed Army flight school and earned his Army Aviator Badge. During his second tour, Tom served as a UH-1 Huey pilot with the 57th Assault Helicopter Company “Gladiators” flying clandestine cross-border operations into Cambodia and Laos for top secret MACV-SOG recon teams.Tom was the recipient of the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat, 2 Bronze Star Medals for Valor and 15 Air Medals for Valor. In 2009, Tom retired from the US Postal Service after a long career as a letter carrier. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Melissa, his son, Jonathan and his daughter, Jennifer Branin. A memorial service is planned for Friday, November 20 at 11:00 AM at the Cypress-Fairbanks Funeral Home.
The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Thomas’s name to Camp Hope, a local foundation that helps combat veterans suffering from PTSD
